ENOUGH! NYT Editor Ordered ‘Non-Trump Topics’ for Entire Opinions Section

“I’d encourage everyone to carve out some space in their lives and brains for non-Trump topics.”

The New York Times’ Sunday Review was devoid of any articles on President Trump and it was done on purpose.

Jim Dao, who is the NYT opinion editor, was fed up with the ‘round-the-clock coverage of the president and made the conscious decision to restrict the content to anything but Trump. Sunday Review’s lead editor, Rachel Dry, explained via e-mail:

“Our ambitions with this Sunday Review were twofold: To highlight stories we think are important and engaging and to put forward an argument about the media attention the president commands. We decided not to overexplain the premise — though of course, that is what I’m doing now — and hoped readers would find the section of interest whether they noticed anything different or not.”

Though the Review didn’t overtly let readers in on their coup, they hinted at it on the title page with this description: “What happens when you don’t talk about the one thing on everyone’s mind…”

So, eighteen stories in all were published on a range of “non-Trump topics” including sleep schedules, sperm, refugees, and a plea to stop spanking black children. Amazingly, the story, “The Moral Failing of Obamacare Repeal,” managed not to blame Trump directly, but only indirectly through the GOP.

Op-ed columnist David Leonhardt said not concentrating on Trump was good for a change and added that everyone needs to take a break every once in a while:

Much of the attention to Trump is warranted, of course. In fact, it’s important. But it does have an unfortunate side effect: It crowds out discussion of other vital topics. In the weeks ahead, I’d encourage everyone to carve out some space in their lives and brains for non-Trump topics.

Of course, the Gray Lady is already back to its regularly scheduled agenda against the current White House. So, that didn’t last long.

But here’s the funny thing: remember when The Times encouraged everyone to carve out some space in their lives and brains to step away from the 24/7 Barack Obama overload? Oh, that’s right, they didn’t! That would’ve meant an edition entirely devoid of content of heaping praise on the Hopey-Changey One.
