Teacher Calls Student’s Employer Complaining of “Hate Speech” After Online Debate
One thing that has become very clear over the past several years is that some liberals and progressives can’t handle losing a debate — when they even engage in them in the first place — and will sometimes react by lashing out, after a discussion, at those who disagree with them politically.
This was recently exemplified by Texas State University history professor Elizabeth Bishop, who contacted the employers of a current and former student and demanded they be fired after an exchange on a Facebook post didn’t go her way, according to Campus Reform.
The conversation took place on a now-deleted status update posted by Texas State student body vice president-elect Colton Duncan, which was critical of the school’s decision to allow as a guest speaker an “American terrorist,” former Black Panther and civil rights activist Angela Davis, invited by the school’s Black Lives Matter chapter.
avis is an avowed communist and was once on the FBI’s “10 most wanted list” in the 1970s.
TSU had previously refused to allow the College Republicans to hold a women’s empowerment event on campus.
The post was ultimately removed by Facebook for allegedly “violating community standards,” but not before a discussion of capitalism versus communism and the differences between communism and national socialism was held between Bishop and a number of other people.
According to PJ Media, one of those who engaged in debate with Bishop was Alexander Morrissette, an employee of the Texas Public Policy Foundation, an organization that received a call from Bishop the following day insinuating that Morrissette had made “disparaging” posts toward her. Bishop failed to provide any evidence.
“Thankfully, my employer laughed the ordeal off after seeing that the allegations of hate speech were false,” Morrissette told Campus Reform. “The employers on college campuses, especially campuses that are so rife with politically correct culture, may not be so judicious in their evaluation of these kinds of claims.”
Not content to stop there, Bishop then tracked down the university department employer of an unnamed student who had “liked” several of Morrissette’s comments in the discussion and demanded that the employer “investigate” the student and “her associates” for engaging in “hate speech” as well as remove the student from any sort of leadership position.
Duncan, who felt compelled to defend his post and correct some factual errors in an “unofficial press conference,” said he was shocked by what Bishop had done and was “deeply disappointed” by the rumors that Bishop was next in line to be named dean of the liberal arts college.
“Someone like that, with little to no regard for the First Amendment, has no business educating the next generation of leaders,” Duncan stated. “The political science department has pumped out a good number of leaders, whether they’re activists, public servants or leaders in the private sector. I shudder at the thought of this woman wielding any authority over this process.”
It remained to be seen whether the anonymous student targeted by Bishop will retain her job and leadership position with the school or if Bishop’s actions would result in her being passed over for promotion.
Regardless, this is yet another example of how the left hates debate and would rather differing opinions be silenced instead of engaged.
